Description

The KLI primarily supports theoretical research in the fields of evolutionary developmental biology and evolutionary cognitive science, as indicated in the introduction. In addition, start-up grants and infrastructural support are available for empirical projects complementary to ongoing, behavioral and evolutionary research at the KLI.

Potential applicants should contact the scientific manager via the contact form. At a later stage a formal application and detailed project description in English will be required. The applicant may then be invited to give a talk on their past research and planned project. The project proposals will be sent out for external review and evaluated by the Board of Directors, depending on open positions. Applicants of all nationalities will be considered.

The KLI provides different categories of fellowships:

 

For Resident Faculty

KLI Postdoctoral Fellowship

  • Eligibility: Researchers who obtained their doctoral degree no more than eight years before the start of their fellowship.
  • Duration: One year
  • Remuneration: Postdoctoral stipend, travel expenses
  • Extension: One year maximum, pending review

KLI Senior Fellowship

  • Eligibility: Accomplished researchers who obtained their doctoral degree more than eight years before the start of their fellowship.
  • Duration: One year
  • Remuneration: Senior stipend, travel expenses
  • Extension: One year maximum, pending review

Hans Przibram Fellowship in EvoDevo Research

  • Eligibility: Reserved for postdoctoral projects on either theory, metatheory, modeling, philosophy, or history of evolutionary developmental biology.
  • Duration: One year
  • Remuneration: Postdoctoral stipend, travel expenses
  • Extension: Two years maximum, pending review

KLI Visiting Fellowship

  • Eligibility: Accomplished scholars who work at the KLI on a sabbatical leave from their home institution.
  • Duration: One week to several months
  • Remuneration: Accommodation and travel expenses

 

For Resident Students

Students who come to the KLI for research in the context of their graduate or doctoral work that corresponds to the aims of the institute. The following fellowships are available:

KLI Junior Visiting Fellowship

  • Eligibility: Students who wish to visit the KLI for scientific interaction.
  • Duration: One week to 6 months maximum
  • Remuneration: Travel and accommodation expenses

KLI Writing-Up Fellowship

  • Eligibility: Students, who are in the writing-up phase of already completed research for a doctoral thesis.
  • Duration: Up to 6 months
  • Remuneration: Stipend

 

For Exchange Students

Austrian graduate and postdoctoral students who carry out projects in theoretical biology at a foreign academic institution, or foreign graduate and postdoctoral students who carry out projects at an Austrian research institution.

KLI Exchange Fellowship

  • Eligibility: Students holding a master’s or doctoral degree who are enrolled in an academic curriculum or are affiliated with a university department
  • Duration: One year
  • Remuneration: Stipend, travel expenses
  • Extension: One year maximum, pending review
  • Location: Host institution
