Title: Understanding the Current Health and Climate Crisis through the Concept of Salutogenesis
Abstract: Medical research and medical theory increasingly emphasize the critical role of the environment in addressing healthcare and ethical issues related to climate change. This paper explores the ecological dimension of health within contemporary medicine through the lens of the salutogenic approach, originally introduced by Aaron Antonovsky (1979; 1987; 1996).
The analysis adapts and applies this approach to understand the interplay between health and the environment, introducing the concept of salutogenic environments. The objectives are twofold: 1) accentuating the positive and preventive aspects of the environment concerning health, and 2) providing clarity on the contrast between pathogenic and salutogenic elements in the environment.
After a historical and theoretical introduction to the concepts of salutogenesis and pathogenesis, the paper delves into the role of salutogenic environments. Emphasis is placed on their significance in medical theory and healthcare, highlighting their innovative potential in addressing the contemporary health and environmental crisis.
